Mora, Pat

Nació en el El Paso, Texas, en 1942 Creció en un ambiente bilingüe; español obligatorio en casa, debido a la gran influencia de sus cuatro abuelos quienen llegaron de México a Texas al inicio de los 1900's. Ganadora de una gran cantidad de premios por su literatura poesía y libros para niños.

Siempre promoviendo y tratando de conectar a las comunidades a través de la literatura. Iniciadora del "Día de los Niños-Día de los Libros" el cual tiene como propósito, el celebrar la literatura en cualquier idioma e impulsar el hecho de ser bilingüe; envolviendo a familias que no hablan inglés en actividades culturales y de aprendizaje elemental.

Pachanga deliciosa, como lo dice el título, es un delicioso cuento bilingüe para los chiquititos y grandes también, con texto e ilustraciones del suroeste, animales y flora del desierto.

Todo el cuento ocurre en una noche cuando las lagartijas, los armadillos, abejas, el pescado y los pajaritos celebran una pachanga deliciosa con jugos de mangos, bananas, naranjas, y cerezas; preparan una rica salsa con chiles, tomates y cilantro; y todo mientras tocan instrumentos, cantan y bailan; todos, ancianos y jóvenes, celebran bajo la luna y las estrellas. 

Un libro para leer en voz alta.

Delicious Hullabaloo, as the title of the book indicates, this is a delicious bilingual story for kids and big kids at heart, with text and illustrations that takes place in the southwest with creatures and flora from the desert.

The entire story is a one-night event as lizards, armadillos, birds, bees and the fish have a delicious hullabaloo with juices made of mangoes, bananas, oranges, and cherries; they prepare a wonderful salsa with chiles, cilantro and tomatoes; all the while playing instruments, singing, and dancing, young and old, under the moon and starlight too. 

A book to be read aloud.

La autora usa la historia de la vida de Tomás Rivera cuando era niño y viajaba con su familia de los campos agrícolas de Texas a Iowa. 

Con la familia viajaba el papá grande, o Abuelo, quien compartía sus cuentos con Tomás y su hermano. Mientras los padres trabajaban en el campo, el Abuelo que cantaba cuentos se le acabaron y le dijo a Tomás que fuera a la biblioteca. 

Es allí donde comienza una relación entre Tomás, la bibliotecaria, y el mundo del conocimiento que llevó a Tomás a ser canciller de una universidad en California. Las ilustraciones son reales y/o imaginarias, las cuales ayudan a proyectar una imagen muy positiva del uso de la biblioteca. 

Un gran libro para leer en voz alta y compartir la idea de que todos podemos llegar lejos si nos lo proponemos.

The author makes a story of the life of Tomás Rivera as he and his family moved yearly from working in the fields of Texas to the fields of Iowa. 

With the family was "papá grande" or Grandfather who would tell stories to Tomás and his brother while their parents worked. When Grandpa runs out of stories, he tells Tomás to go to the library. There he meets the librarian who offers books which help Tomás and his imagination go wild. 

But with the end of the harvest season, Tomás must return with his family to Texas. A sad departure, but happily a very strong relationship has been developed between the child, the librarian, and the world of knowledge. 

Tomás readily embarks in a journey of learning reaching his highest point as an author and Chancellor of a California university. The illustrations are real and imaginary, and help the text in a very positive way. 

A great book to read aloud and share to let kids know they too can reach for the stars.
